![]() ![]() ![]() Eight 12-inch guns became more desirable than four 12 inch guns and bunch of 8-inch secondaries. That meant shorter-ranged secondary guns became less viable and there was greater need for longer-ranged primary guns. Furthermore, as guns, shells, propellants, rangefinders, and fire control systems got better, potential engagement ranges got longer. But with shells from all those secondary guns also churning up the water, it became very hard to tell which splashes were from which gun, which made it harder to correct the gunnery of the main guns and score hits. Spotters looked for the splash of main gun shells that had missed and told the fire controlmen and gunners to make corrections accordingly. However, as gunnery ranges got longer and longer, all those secondary guns created problems for the fire controlmen trying to lay the main guns. In and of itself, this concept had some merit-at the battle of Tsushima in 1905, HE shells from Japanese secondary guns started massive fires which crippled several Russian battleships. The idea was that the main guns would fire large, heavy armor-piercing shells, while the secondary guns would spit out a high volume of fire. They also carried a large number of secondary guns (usually 6+ inches). Prior to the Dreadnought, battleships usually carried four large (9-13 inch) main guns in a pair of twin turrets. In other words, all its firepower was concentrated in its eight 12-inch main guns, as opposed to having main guns and a secondary battery. ![]() It was the first "monocaliber" or "all big gun" battleship in existence.
